Common breastfeeding problems include:

Jan offers:

  • Prenatal visits – to prepare for successful breastfeeding
  • and/or, Postpartum consultations – to identify and to treat a breastfeeding problem

A prenatal consultation includes:

  • Clarifying your breastfeeding goals
  • Identifying personal risks factors for as breastfeeding problems (such as previous breast surgery, difficulty with breastfeeding another child, planned C-Section, anticipated early birth)
  • Reviewing basic breastfeeding biology and steps to milk production
  • Planning for breastfeeding support

A postpartum lactation consultation includes:

  • Reviewing important pregnancy, birth and early parenting history
  • Identifying your concerns and actions taken thus far
  • Assessing your baby’s latch, tongue movement, and ability to remove milk
  • Weighing your baby, both pre- and post-feedings, using a professional (Tanita) scale
  • Evaluating the adequacy of your breast tissue, your nursing position, frequency of feedings, and complicating factors (such as fatigue, depression, and family support)
  • Developing a step-by-step approach to solving your concerns
  • Planning follow-up phone calls and/or visits as needed

Lactation visit includes review of your history form, the 1.5 hour visit, a  followup phone consultation and a written summary of consultation. Some parent concerns may require additional visits.
